Miley Cyrus ensured she was a hot talking point at the MTV VMA awards in a series of reliably eye-popping outfits.

Not satisfied with only presenting the show, the singer proved she wanted to make waves in the fashion stakes too by arriving almost naked in a barely-there dress with silver straps and a chandelier-style skirt.

The outfit set the tone for the rest of her appearances, which saw her wear a clear plastic tunic with carefully placed large buttons and a tiny cut-out white dress with knee high boots and long blonde dreadlocks.

But it was Taylor Swift and her squad of nine celebrity friends, who all appeared in her hit video Bad Blood, who stole the red carpet crown.

Selena Gomez, Cara Delevingne, Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Lily Aldridge, Martha Hunt, Hailee Steinfeld, Serayah and Mariska Hargitay all looked stunning as they joined Taylor Swift and showed the rest of the VMAs nominees how to make an entrance.

Swift wore an uncharacteristically edgy outfit, compared with her usual demure look, a black and gold two-piece crop top and loose fitting trousers and dark eye make-up.

The awards ceremony is notorious for its wild fashion, with many celebrities shunning ball gowns for a more eccentric look.

Model Amber Rose arrived with a girl gang of her own and took the opportunity to highlight stereotypical abuse aimed at women, wearing dresses adorned with negative slurs that included "gold digger", ''whore," and ''stripper" along with other derogatory words.

FKA Twigs was in an elegant but still racy black spiderweb dress and Nicki Minaj went for a sexy bronze illusion gown that made her look like a statuette herself.

Pregnant Kim Kardashian, fond of showing off her baby bump, walked with hubby Kanye West in a tight tan gown with open laces at the front.
