A programme with the aim of merging academic subjects with physical activity will be implemented in the coming scholastic year.

A number of workshops were carried out by primary physical education teachers last scholastic year, Education Officer for Physical Education, Kevin Azzopardi said. The concept was piloted at Safi Primary School last year and teachers reported higher engagement by students.

Speaking during the launch, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said it was crucial for the educator to think of new innovative ways on how to engage children.

An additional 20 PE teachers have been engaged for the upcoming scholastic year, with every college having at least an additional peripatetic teacher.

To complement these new policies, a national BMI project across all primary and secondary schools, including independent and church schools, reaching a total of 46,000 pupils will also be introduced.
