Who is responsible for public cleanliness? Is it the local council or the central government?

Because here in Sliema we now have an infestation between Dingli Street and St John Bosco Street on either side of the Salesian Theatre. The pavements and the road are absolutely filthy as are the steps of the theatre, and no matter how many times the steps are cleaned, by the next day they are filthy again.

This is a disgrace and I’m sure it is a health hazard.

The other day I noticed around a dozen pigeons standing sentinel on the ledges of the flats next to the theatre and it was like something out of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. It was scary.

Now they have also started moving towards St Margaret Street. On some of the roofs between Dingli and Melita streets there are long pieces of black plastic fluttering, which seem to keep them away but they are now on the roofs of some abandoned flats between Melita and Isouard Streets.

You just can’t walk there as you risk being ‘bombed’.

On the opposite side of the pavement there is a grocer’s shop and they have now started to leave their disgusting droppings even there.

Can someone please do something soon? If we at least had a weekly bowser to power wash the pavements and streets with plenty of disinfectant it would not be so bad. I hope that someone somewhere hears this plea before we have some sort of epidemic as it really is disgusting
