A golden retriever is set to make a full recovery after being driven on a 2,400-mile (3,862km) round trip through eight countries to undergo a life-saving operation in the UK.

Pelle, from Oslo, Norway, was diagnosed with a “liver shunt” – where a blood vessel within the liver diverts the blood flow incorrectly – when he was three months old. His owners, Cathrine Sorlie and Nils Christian Nordahl, were told that no veterinary surgeons in Norway could perform the surgery required to save his life.

But the couple tracked down vet Kieran Borgeat, of Highcroft Veterinary Referrals in Bristol, who was able to carry out the £3,500 procedure. They travelled through Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium and France for the three-hour operation, and Pelle is making a full recovery in Oslo.

App shows if you are lark or owl

A new smartphone app that measures mood and brain power can show if you are a lark or an owl.

Psychologists launched the Moo-Q app to help people discover what time of day they are at their best.

Dr Sophie von Stumm, from Goldsmiths, University of London, who helped develop the iPhone app, said: “If you notice for example that your brain test scores are highest early in the day, you might be well advised to undertake important tasks that require a bit more brainpower first thing in the morning.” Moo-Q can be downloaded free from Apple’s App Store.

CCTV cameras in the reserve have captured every minute of their lives, including their births on June 28.

Ball State said it is the second time in three years that a student has made a half-court shot to win free tuition for a semester. The other student did it in August 2013.
