These two female northern white rhinos are quite literally among the last of a dying breed.

There is just one other female and one other male left on the planet.

They're considered extinct in the wild.

Three of them live under armed guard at a wildlife sanctuary in Kenya.

Officials at the Ol Pejeta Conservency who are trying to save the species want to develop a means of artificial reproduction.

And the CEO says that's going to take money.

"The idea is to try and get the international public behind it to try to save the species the point being without the money, it's impossible to develop the science that's necessary to create the embryos that will eventually save the species."

The conservancy has launched several campaigns over the years to raise awareness of the plight of the northern white rhino ... like this cricket tournament earlier this year between Maasai warriors and a British Army Training Unit.

The goal is to raise 800-thousand dollars to develop in-vitro fertilisation techniques.

It's never been tried on rhinos, but time is running out.

One of these rare animals died last month at a Czech zoo.
