The government has been engaging security officers at the Malta Freeport Corporation in order to favour the GWU, the UHM alleged today, quoting ‘informed sources’.

The two unions are locked in a battle for trade union recognition.

The UHM said the workers are being recruited with the blessing of Economic Services Minister Chris Cardona. They had not been previously registering for work.

While workers should be engaged according to their abilities, qualifications and experience, this was not the case at the Freeport Corporation, where workers were being engaged simply because they supported Labour, the UHM said.

These goings on, the union added, undermined comments by the prime minister in April that he was concerned about tensions among trade unions. At the time he had called for the setting of a trade unions council.
