Malta International Airport has invested in state-of-the-art technology to improve the security screening procedure in compliance with fresh EU regulations.

As from September 1, passengers could have their hand luggage and electronic devices (laptops, tablets and mobile phones) checked for traces of explosive material using specialised detection technology.

“Ongoing structural works at the central security screening area, as well as the new equipment installed, are intended to make sure this procedure meets the new regulatory demands set out by the EU,” said MIA head of security Patrick Murgo.

This year alone, MIA is investing over €500,000 in security equipment and infrastructure. This includes explosive trace detection machines, anti-return gates, central screening area improvements and more.
