Top seed Novak Djokovic avenged his French Open final loss to Stan Wawrinka by crushing the Swiss 6-4 6-1 yesterday to reach the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Djokovic, now two wins away from becoming the first player to win all nine ATP Masters titles, needed a mere 63 minutes to dispatch fifth seed Wawrinka in the first meeting between the two players since Roland Garros.

Wawrinka, who denied Djoko-vic a chance to complete a career grand slam in Paris, pushed a backhand wide on match point and finished with 33 unforced errors, more than double that of his in-form opponent.

Djokovic, a four-times runner-up in Cincinnati, broke Waw-rinka’s serve four times and dropped just 12 points on serve in his final tune-up event ahead of the August 31-September 13 US Open in New York.

Up next for the world number one will be Ukrainian qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov, a 6-4 6-2 winner over Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych yesterday.

In other quarter-final action scheduled for late last night, defending champion Roger Federer was facing unseeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez while third seed Andy Murray was to battle 12th seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Roger Federer had cruised into the quarter-finals with a 6-1 6-1 demolition of South African Kevin Anderson.

The Swiss master needed just 55 minutes to register his easy win.

Playing in his first tournament since losing the Wimbledon final to Djokovic last month, Federer looked fresh and rested and ad-vanced to a last-eight match against Lopez, who upset 2013 Cincinnati champion Rafa Nadal 5-7 6-4 7-6 on Thursday.

“I think the first break always gives you a bit of a boost and right then I felt conditions weren’t that fast and I could probably get some more balls back than maybe a day session,” Federer said.
