Mosta struck two goals in the closing stages of the match to overcome Floriana 2-1 at the National Stadium.

The Greens had seemingly set to give new coach Luis Oliveira a good start to life in the BOV Premier League when they took the lead after only five minutes.

They were awarded a corner on the right channel from which Nicholas Chiesa sent a dipping cross towards Steve Bonnici who headed the ball past a stranded Omar Borg.

Steve Pisani came close to a second goal on 28 minutes when he took charge of a central free-kick but his curling drive was pushed away by Mosta goalkeeper Omar Borg.

Mosta finally came close to an equaliser on the stroke of halftime when Ice-Cream Guobadia, who was making his debut for the Blues, was picked on the edge of the area by Mohammed but his thumping drive was somehow kept out by Calleja Cremona.

Mosta threatened again on 66 minutes when in a swift break Chukwide played in Fidelis who was denied by a fine reflex save from the onrushing Matthew Calleja Cremona.

Zammit tried to reshuffle his pack when he withdrew the tiring Dyson Falzon and Mark Brincat and roped in James Brincat and Bobby Frederick.

James Brincat almost had a instant impact as on 69 minutes he released Fidelis who fired over with only Calleja Cremona to beat.

The Mosta youngster took matters into his hands seven minutes from time when latched on a loose ball and let fly a scorching drive that flew into the top corner of the net.

Mosta were not finished yet and three minutes from time Floriana goalkeeper Calleja Cremona charged out of his goal to try and intercept Manolito Micallef’s long pass but he completely missed the ball and Fidelis had the simple task of pushing the ball into an empty net.

In stoppage time, Floriana could have scored a dramatic equaliser when goalkeeper Omar Borg fumbled his attempt to punch away Juninho’s cross but Fontanella incredibly headed wide in front of a gaping goal.

Floriana’s Nicolas Chiesa was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
