Rome City Council will use tracking and geolocation technology to screen the capital's pavements for potholes, and its sewers and signage for defects, Italian news agency Ansa has reported.
A database of problems will then be set up to ensure prompt intervention, it said.
The city council has set aside €109 million over the next three years to survey and maintain the most important streets in the capital.
"This is truly a revolution that will make our streets safer," said Maurizio Puzzi, the councillor for public contracts.
