Memphis Depay struck twice as Manchester United came from behind to beat Club Brugge 3-1 at Old Trafford in their Champions League qualifying play-off first leg last night.

The Engish Premier League side got off to a dismal start when midfielder Michael Carrick deflected a free-kick into his own net eight minutes in.

However, United were soon level through a fine individual goal from Depay five minutes later before the Dutchman completed the turnaround two minutes from half-time when he curled in another from the edge of the Brugge penalty area.

Depay missed the target when set by Wayne Rooney for a hat-trick chance in the second half.

The visitors finished the match with 10 men after defender Brandon Mechele collected a second caution, before Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini added a third for United in stoppage time from Depay’s cross.

Lazio beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico with a well-taken finish by substitute Keita.

Both teams hit the post in quick succession during the first half, with a 25-yard effort from Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender followed by an angled shot from Miroslav Klose hitting the upright at the other end.

Leverkusen thought they had taken the lead on 69 minutes when Hakan Calhanoglu’s shot was flicked in by Stefan Kiessling, who was ruled offside.

On 77 minutes, 20-year-old Senegal forward Keita, who had replaced Klose at the break, held off the Leverkusen defence to slot into the far corner.

However, the match was marred by allegations of racial chanting coming from the stands.

Sporting beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 in Lisbon.

Colombia forward Teofilo Gutierrez put the Portuguese side ahead after 12 minutes, bundling the ball in from close range.

On 27 minutes, Jefferson tripped Zoran Tosic to give away a penalty, but CSKA striker Seydou Doumbia saw his spot-kick saved.

The Ivory Coast forward, back in Moscow following a spell at Roma, made amends five minutes before the break, beating a high defensive line to sprint clear and round the Sporting goalkeeper.

With just eight minutes left, Slimani drilled the ball past Igor Akinfeev from the edge of the penalty area to secure a narrow victory.

BATE Borisov beat 10-man Partizan Belgrade 1-0 through Mikhail Gordeichuk’s second-half header 15 minutes from time.

Partizan had earlier seen midfielder Marko Jevtovic sent off for a second caution in first-half stoppage time.

In last night’s early kick-off, Astana became the first Kazakhstan team to win a Champions League play-off match with a 1-0 home victory over APOEL Nicosia.

A fine header from Baurzhan Dzholchiyev on 14 minutes proved enough for the Blue and Yellows, who are aiming to make their debut in the group stages.

Otamendi set for City

Valencia will not let the unresolved future of Argentina centre back Nicolas Otamendi distract them from tonight’s Champions League play-off first leg at home to Monaco, according to coach Nuno.

Otamendi, 27, a fierce tackler who is also strong in the air, is poised to join Manchester City for a fee of 45 million euros, Spanish media reported yesterday.

Nuno did not confirm a deal had been reached but said an announcement would come soon.

“There is nothing more important than the Monaco match,” the Portuguese said.

“We have been preparing the game for days without the option of Otamendi. The players are exclusively focused on the opponent.”

Valencia, the 2000 and 2001 Champions League runners-up, qualified for the playoffs thanks to a fourth-place finish in La Liga last season and are hoping to secure a lucrative spot in the group stage for the first time in three years.
