Let’s stop confusing readers with the way we spell English-borrowed words in Maltese. Besides looking strangely spelt, they show a lack of seriousness by our academics who were supposed to have solved this problem years ago.

There used to be a time when only a few words were being spelt incorrectly but now it’s getting out of hand. It’s certainly time to put an end to this free-for-all and choose the easy way by writing a loan word in proper English in inverted commas or italics.

Just one English loan word spelt in Maltese may ruin an otherwise perfect piece of Maltese literature.

I suggest that teachers and publishers refuse work which include English loan words spelt in Maltese.
