Malta Stock Exchange’s social events committee hosted 20 young children, nuns and carers from Tarxien Children’s Home to a day by a swimming pool at a privately-owned farmhouse.

The event regularly organises events for staff and their families, combining these events with fundraising for charitable causes.

The Exchange and its staff also donated money towards the day out.

The event was also made possible with the support of David Azzopardi  from Sathobby, Joe Borg from Smart Office Supplies Ltd, whose family hosted the event, and Alex Fenech from Percius Car Hire.

GasanMamo backs drink driving campaign

Gasan Mamo Insurance is supporting the national campaign to raise awareness on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol. The campaign is being undertaken by Bay Radio with the backing of Aġenzija Sedqa, Drink Aware Malta, Transport Malta and the Times of Malta. Drink driving accounted for at least 13 per cent of all road fatalities last year.

The #dontrisk campaign tackles this by bringing a positive message which is clear and simple: If you planning to go out and drink, make arrangements to avoid driving, whether that is using public transport, taking a taxi or nominating a driver who will not drink.

A website, www.dontrisk.com.mt, includes information about the laws regulating such matters, legal alcohol limits, as well as how alcohol affects driving. The site also gives advice on how to stay safe on the road, along with alcohol-free alternatives.

Banif sponsors Mistra battery restoration

Banif Bank is supporting Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna (FWA) through a sponsorship for its long-term management of the 18th century Mistra battery.

The FWA’s aim is to restore this important monument to its one-time glory. The exercise will see its original extensive stone gun platform re-exposed, the gun merlons rebuilt, part of the stone parapet wall rebuilt and the rear part of the defensive ditch re-excavated. The draw bridge will be re-installed and the interior of the two block-houses will be restored and used for a museum display and six replica 18th-century naval guns. There are also plans to install basic water and electrical services and publish a guide book on the history of the battery and the subject of 18th-century Maltese coastal defences.

The coastal battery was built by the Order of St John between 1714 and 1716 during the rule of the Aragonese Grand Master Ramon Perrelos. However, the battery entrance is surmounted by the armorial arms of Grand Master Manuel Pinto de Fonseca, which may indicate that it was either completed or reconstructed at a later stage. This was done at a time of significant strategic change in the defensive outlook of the Order, during which the defences were expanded from the Grand Harbour area to the entire island. Mistra battery was built as part of this major defensive rethink meant to slow down enemy landing until the mobile reserves reach the place of landing.

Farsons supports MMDNA publication

The Farsons Foundation has extended its support to the Malta Memorial District Nursing Association (MMDNA) through a partial sponsorship of the publication of a handbook for healthcare professionals entitled Just in Case: Care and Case Management in Malta.

“This handbook is of particular interest not only to healthcare professionals, but also to students and the public.

“This year the MMDNA celebrates its 70th anniversary and we are grateful for the tremendous support Farsons has always given our association,” MMDNA chairman Grace Jaccarini said.

The non-profit MMDNA was set up in 1945 to provide professional nursing care to the Maltese community in their homes. The association has grown and developed over the years, currently employing over 140 staff. It makes over 1,500 home visits a day.

The handbook can be obtained from the MMDNA offices in Kappara at the sponsored price of €5. A copy can be reserved by e-mailing the association at melitafarrugia@mmdna.com.
