The past 17 days saw the ditch around Valletta enjoying a flurry of unusual activity with a number of events luring passers-by towards an area of the city that is typically devoid of life.

The events were part of the European Architecture Student Assembly (EASA) festival that came to an end yesterday and that saw some 500 students and renowned architects from all over Europe congregate in the Maltese capital.

The festival consisted of a series of workshops, public talks and construction projects, all revolving around the temporary architecture village that took life around the Valletta ditch.

As part of the initiative, a number of underground tunnels and sally ports leading from Valletta to the ditch around the former city gate were temporarily opened to the public.

These are some of the highlights from the series of events that not even a torrential downpour on one of the open days managed to dampen. All photography is by Alexandra Kononchenko.
