As an ex-Allied Newspapers’ ‘boy’ between 1949 and 1960, and now aged 92, I would like to pass on my congratulations on the Times of Malta’s 80th anniversary.
I started, on arrival in Malta after leaving the British Army, as a cub sports reporter with Robbie DeCesare and Tom Hedley as editor and left to go to the Dockyard as welfare officer, having become sports editor with Wilfred Asciak as my deputy.
Those were the days when dear Mabel Strickland would invite us to Villa Parisio and Joe Agius was managing at the press.
I will not be around when the newspaper reaches its centenary but have no doubt it will make it.
Good luck and God Bless all at Allied Newspapers.
