Dwejra Bay, in Gozo is a gem within these Maltese islands and its famous Azure Window is displayed on many of the posters promoting Malta. Visitors by the thousands throng the area after disgorging from dozens of coaches, double-decker busses, taxis and rental cars.

A wander down to the so-called ‘inland sea’ leads to the disappointing vista of vehicles parked everywhere and boat trailers dumped on the pebbles. The area is divided up with concrete ramps from boat huts down to the water’s edge, some covered with umbrellas and tables.

The main car park is also a jumble of cars and buses stacked behind an illogical series of small islands. It has a variety of hawkers, ice cream vans and aggressive guide book sellers dominating the scene like an African bazaar. One foreign hawker has also parked a camper van and tent to display his cheap tacky wares.

The area has several diesel generators including one parked on a plinth supplying power to a council office. The restaurant has three generators droning away day and night. The noise and air pollution has reached unacceptable levels.

Is it not about time that a serious plan is formulated to protect this wonderful place? Most of these issues can be solved by providing adequate parking spaces, a boat trailer park and a ban on parking vehicles on the pebble beach area. If it is essential to have electricity supply to various outlets then run a cable to the area or allow solar panels.

I would also suggest that a police and first aid post be set up to keep order in the whole area.
