Recently, Mark Gatt returned from Bulgaria with another ITF seniors bronze medal after winning the doubles event.

Gatt and playing partner Sergey Malkov, from Russia, missed out on silver after bowing to the Euro champions Daniel Dolbea (Germany) and David Concalves (France) 3-6 6-2 10-7.

In the singles, Gatt came up against Greece’s Michael Orfanidis in the bronze medal match.

After a keenly-contested three-hour encounter in Sofia, Orfanidis prevailed 6-3 3-6 7-6.

Gatt had no time to dwell on his defeat as, a couple of hours later, he was back on court, this time in doubles.

The Malta no.3 put his singles disappointment behind him as he and Malkov had the better of Bulgarian pair Yuri Doychev and Peter Ivanov 7-6 3-6 10-5 in another tight game which lasted over two hours.

Gatt was also involved in a very close match against another Greek player, Nikolaos Roditis.

After trailing 5-2 in the first set, Gatt moved up a gear to win 11 games on the trot and record a 7-5 6-0 victory.

Gatt is currently in the world’s top 10 of two ITF senior rankings. He is sixth in mixed doubles, eighth in doubles and 92nd in singles.
