Champions Hibernians and Birkirkara, the FA Trophy winners, lift the curtains on the 2015/16 domestic season tomorrow when they meet in the BOV Super Cup clash at the National Stadium (kick-off 8pm).

The two contestants are widely tipped to challenge for the major honours, moreso after their heartening performances in the UEFA competitions this summer.

Branko Nisevic and Giovanni Tedesco, the coaches of Hibs and Birkirkara respectively, exchanged compliments during a news conference today but both expressed their determination to win the Super Cup and start the campaign on a high note.

"Tomorrow's game is between the teams who maybe showed the most (this summer), the two teams of the moment," Nisevic said in comments to Times of Malta.

"The game is a one-match competition, you get a trophy for just one game. Sometimes, game situations, game moments, can dictate what's going to happen.

"It's a good trophy, one of the three trophies in the year and we will certainly try to win it.

"But then the real competition starts after the match, which will be the league... a marathon competition."

Birkirkara's Tedesco, who took over from Paul Zammit this summer, declared himself pleased with the improvement shown by Maltese clubs in this season's European competitions.

The Italian hopes that tomorrow's Super Cup final will offer entertaining fare to the fans.

"I hope it will be a very nice game with a good result for Birkirkara," Tedesco said.

"We have both done well in Europe and the expectations are high but it's better like this as it shows that Maltese football is growing."

Birkirkara, who lost on penalties to West Ham United after beating the English side 1-0 at home in the second qualifying round of the Europa League last month, are the Super Cup holders.

In the Champions League, Hibernians bowed out to Maccabi Tel Aviv but earned the plaudits for their 2-1 home win over the Israeli club who have reached the play-offs of Europe's top competition.
