A woman who bit a policewoman after she was taken to a police station because she was drunk and disorderly was today handed a suspended jail term and fined €5,000.

21-year-old Czech Barbora Krizkova, who lives in St Paul's Bay, pleaded guilty to assaulting and resisting two police officers at the Qawra police station, biting one of the officers on the arm, slightly injuring her and to being drunk and incapable of taking care of herself.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras heard how the police received reports from residents about a drunk woman sitting on the stairs of a block of apartments in St Paul's Bay. When the police approached her and took her to the police station, she resisted them.

In court, the woman said she did not remember anything because she had been too drunk.

"I really apologise. I really never wanted to hurt anyone, especially the police. I am not that kind of person but I really do not remember anything I did," she told the magistrate as she sobbed.

"What you have done is something very serious. The law even provides for a term of imprisonment but in your case you should not go to jail, but there is a minimum fine that I must apply," the magistrate told her.

As she confirmed that she was pleading guilty to the charges brought against her, the Czech woman was jailed for seven months suspended for 18 months and fined €5,000.

Police Inspector Godwin Scerri prosecuted while lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace was defence lawyer.
