A flock of determined Swifties recently congregated in London to watch their heroine take to the stage and, among the bopping teenagers, was one bewildered father. Edward Demicoli sheepishly admits to having a blast at this year’s edition of The British Summer Time Hyde Park.
Do you attend festivals regularly?
Not really, whenever I can.
Which festival did you attend?
The British Summer Time Hyde Park, London, which I consider one of the best organised festivals around.
Why did you choose this particular one and was it your first time?
I wanted to take my daughter to see Taylor Swift, who was headlining the second weekend of the festival. It was my daughter’s first- ever concert and my first time at this festival.
When is it held?
Over two weekends in June.
Who were the main artists on the line-up?
Taylor Swift headlined the last day with Ellie Goulding and Jon Newman. Blur, The Who and Kylie Minogue headlined other nights.
Which performance were you most looking forward to and why?
This time round it was Julia, my 12-year-old daughter who exceeded all enthusiasm and fandom for Taylor Swift. After all, she was the reason we went in the first place.
Is it a camping sort of festival?
Happily, no. I don’t see that working out with a 12-year-old.
If there was one thing you would change about the festival, this would be?
Nothing. It is an extremely well-organised festival with excellent food, good transport and no queues. It is the sort of festival you can really enjoy with the whole family.
Top highlight from your point of view?
Impeccable organisation.
Give us a funny/weird anecdote.
Well, a 45-year-old at a Taylor Swift concert is already pretty weird in itself, so let’s not go there.
How much ahead did you need to book?
Way back in January.
Your advice to those who are thinking of going next year?
Go as early as you can, because there is a great vibe throughout the day too.
Any plans for other festivals?
A U2 concert in October and Rock Wechter next year.
What you need to know
British Summer Time Hyde Park is known for its family-friendly mix of musical acts, comedy and award-winning street food. The full festival line-up is typically announced around April, but tickets go on sale much earlier with the festival taking place around the last weekend of June.
