The Operation Commander of the EU Naval Operation against human smugglers and traffickers paid a visit to Malta last Thursday.

The Commander, Admiral Enrico Credendino, met with Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi, Commander of the Armed Forces of Malta, and with Robert Visser, executive director of the European Asylum Support Office.

Admiral Credendino was also shown some naval and air assets from contributing member states. In the framework of an ongoing outreach action, the visit was instrumental in further promoting the operation mandate.

Launched on June 22, the aim of the operation is to identify, capture and dispose of vessels and related assets used or suspected of being used by human traffickers, in an effort to disrupt the business of migrant traffickers and smugglers in the central and southern Mediterranean.

Admiral Credendino and his delegation were hosted to lunch at the Italian Ambassador’s residence.
