Seventy-five boys and girls aged between five and 12 are taking part in the first edition of Summer Skolasport.

The programme consists of three half-day sessions every week till the first week of September during which participants are being trained by experienced coaches in various sport disciplines. These include swimming, waterpolo, gymnastics, climbing and physical activities. Facilities at Gozo Sports Complex, Victoria, Otters club, Marsalforn and Kerċem club are being used.

The programme also includes sessions in acting, art, cooking and crafts.

At the programme’s inauguration, Gozo Minister Anton Refalo welcomed the initiative and said he hoped the participating children would realise their potential and join one of the various sports associations in Gozo to continue practising sport throughout the year.

The programme is part of the ministry’s Gozo Sports Board’s efforts to introduce children to various sporting disciplines. Board CEO Alvin Grech said that following the setting up of badminton, gymnastics and basketball nurseries, efforts were being made to set up one for volleyball.
