Bishop Paul Alpheran de Bussan (born 1684) became priest of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in 1710. He became Bishop of Malta in 1728 and brought to Malta various relics. In 1755, he approved the Solidarity of Priests at the Immaculate Conception church, Cospicua.

We should honour such bishop for his great help as a great benefactor to the Catholic Church.

A well-known sculptor, Alessandro Algardì, in 1640 produced a bas-relief. There is a bas-relief in a small chapel at Pietà but we do not know who the sculptor was. Knowing that Algardì also produced this type of work, who knows whether Bishop Alpheran de Bussan could have brought this here from overseas. The bishop was very fond of the arts.

Perhaps the experts can enlighten us so that this bas-relief can be restored, if possible by a benefactor. If it does turn out to be the work of Algardì, then those of us living in Pietà should really be proud of the art found at the old chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows. At the moment, the facade of the chapel is being restored as are also some paintings there.

Let us make this chapel a gem in our Pietà. Once the restoration job is completed, it will hopefully be opened to tourists too. At the moment, Mass is being held daily with the help of the Dominican fathers.

One should pay a visit to this chapel.
