Some 35 vehicles are stranded in Pozzallo after the Virtu catamaran was taken out of service following a collision with the pier as it docked at the Italian town yesterday.

A report on the extent of the damage is expected to between Sunday and Monday, a spokesman for the company told the Times of Malta today.

The collision on the MV Jean de La Vallette took place yesterday morning and repair works are necessary before the catamaran can be used again.

The spokesman said repairs could take up to a week.

In the meantime, Virtu is operating the MV San Gwann, but it is only catering for  passengers.

Although it can take up to 20 cars, no vehicles are being transported until "things are in order", the spokesman said.

Virtu Ferries is offering refunds to customers who had bought tickets for the coming days and has made arrangements for the 35 drivers stuck in Pozzallo to garage their vehicles in a car park close by.
