I’m a tourist from Australia (my parents were originally from Malta) and I absolutely love Malta and the Maltese people.

However, I have been really disappointed with the way everyone just shows a total disrespect for this beautiful island by throwing rubbish in the streets and on the beaches. Cigarette butts are simply disposed of wherever the smokers finish off their smoke.

The other day, we abandoned our plans to swim at Buġibba because of all the rubbish floating in the water.

The Maltese government and local councils should start an education programme through the media followed by the imposition of hefty penalties for littering.

Councils should also supply a number of plastic bins in each street, strategically located for household rubbish. This will eliminate unsightly rubbish bags being left on footpaths.

Keep Malta beautiful and clean!
