I was very glad to know that Anne Rossi, a former plotter at the Lascaris War Rooms, is still alive (July 21).
To be honest, at over 90 years of age myself, it is difficult to remember the face, though I have a good idea of the name and of her father, a squadron leader.
At the time, I (photo) was a leading air craftsman in the RAF working on teleprinting machines as my trade, with my office next door to the Lascaris War Rooms in the same tunnel where she used to work as a plotter.
We were a staff of two airmen on each shift, with me sending and receiving messages on teleprinting machines and a runner (messenger) delivering the messages to the many offices (in Nissen huts at that time) in Lascaris ditch, day and night depending on the priority of the message.
We worked on a three-watch system and were billeted at ‘Ta Candia’ RAF station in Siġġiewi, using service transport to take us to Lascaris and back.
I think I am the only ex-serviceman in Malta today who worked at Lascaris War Rooms because some have either died or emigrated to Australia, Canada or the UK.
