Many blue moons ago, I yawned my way through my tutor’s enthusiasm for William Shakespeare and I have given the author a wide berth ever since.

That’s how it was until wild horses in the guise of my wife and our son dragged me to San Anton Gardens for the MADC production of Romeo and Juliet, very sensitively directed by Luke Farrugia and wonderfully acted.

Wow, what a revelation! Not in my wildest dreams would I have expected to enjoy it as much as I did and, although I would not call it my Damascus Moment, the performance certainly encouraged me to take a closer look at the writings of The Bard.

If my old tutor is looking down on me now he will be wagging his finger and saying: ‘I told you so!’
