A short, peaceful break in Gozo was abruptly disturbed upon reading in the Times of Malta of July 28 that home staff and residents of St Vincent de Paul home were forbidden to feed the poor stray cats and kittens that roam the grounds.

This unexpected situation is of grave concern because, with temperatures now hovering at about 40˚C these helpless creatures could be in immediate danger.

Over the years, the Maltese people have been known as kind, warm and hospitable and I am sure that those who have animal welfare at heart would, on hearing what is reportedly happening at St Vincent de Paul home, say: stop, shame on you.

The public demands that the authorities concerned resolve this cruel situation in the shortest time possible.
