Balzan FC have extended the contract of first-team coach Oliver Spiteri until the end of season 2017/18, the BOV Premier League club announced yesterday.

After taking charge of the team in the summer of 2014, Spiteri guided Balzan to a top-four finish in the championship and an historic qualification to the Europa League.

In their maiden appearance in European competitions, Balzan lost 3-0 on aggregate to Bosnia’s FK Zeljeznicar last month.

Anton Tagliaferro, the Balzan FC president, said in a statement that the club are very pleased with Spiteri’s work since he took over as first-team coach last summer.

“Oliver is a true professional and his commitment to the role is highly respected by everyone at Balzan,” Tagliaferro said.

The Balzan president expressed his delight that they have reached agreement with Spiteri to lead the team for the next three years.

For his part, Spiteri said: “I would like to thank everybody at the club for extending my contract, especially the president who shares my vision and ambitions.

“I am really enjoying my time at Balzan and look forward to continuing the good job we started last season in the coming years.

“We have a good blend of youth and experience in the squad and I believe that we will again be competitive in the Premier League this season.”

Spiteri added that he was keen to oversee the progress of the pro-mising players who are coming through the Balzan Academy.
