Pedal cycles and pedelecs fitted with an internal combustion motor or an auxiliary electric motor cannot be driven on the road and will not be registered by Transport Malta because they are illegal, the authority said today.

It said in a statement it would only register power assisted pedal cycles and pedelecs  manufactured for the purpose of being used as a power assisted pedal cycle or pedelec.

It said power assisted pedal cycles and pedelecs could not be ridden along a promenade, on footpaths, in pedestrian subways or through road tunnels.

They had to be ridden in the direction of traffic, keeping to the nearside left as much as possible and observing all traffic regulations, signs and road markings applicable for all other vehicles.

Anyone in possession and using a power assisted pedal cycle not yet registered with Transport Malta should contact the authority for an appointment to have the pedal cycle inspected and registered.

Penalties for unregistered pedal cycles will apply as from September 1.
