Palermo are not prepared to meet Arsenal’s €10m valuation of Joel Campbell and have switched their attentions to Milan Djuric instead.

Reports in Italy claim that the Rosanero have all but given up on the Costa Rica international as their offer of €6 million was rejected out of hand by the Gunners.

According to Tuttosport, club president Maurizio Zamparini is instead looking elsewhere to reinforce his attack.

The top candidate appears to be Cesena’s Bosnian centre-forward Djuric, who spent his entire career in Italy.

Ronaldinho marks winning return

Ronaldinho made a triumphant return to Brazilian football on Saturday when he set up the goal that gave Fluminense a 1-0 win over Gremio at the Maracana stadium.

The former Barcelona forward was a shadow of his former self but his flighted pass into the box after 76 minutes was knocked down for Marcos Junior, who dribbled around the keeper and slotted the ball into the net.

“It was important to start with a win,” Ronaldinho said.

“I am delighted, now I just need to keep working away.”

The 35-year-old former World Player of the Year had not played a competitive match since leaving Mexican side Queretaro in June.

Boateng: Best team lost Supercup

The best team lost the German Supercup on Saturday night, according to Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng.

Boateng hit the crossbar in the first half as Bayern had chances to beat Wolfsburg, but a Nicklas Bendtner equaliser in the last minute set up a penalty shoot-out, which last season’s DFB-Pokal winners Wolfsburg won.

“We shouldn’t be conceding then,” Boateng told Germany’s ZDF television.

“I think we can be happy with our performance, we were clearly the better team with by far the better chances but if you don’t score, then it happens that you concede and we were just unlucky.”

Hecking expects De Bruyne to stay

Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking thinks Kevin De Bruyne will remain with the Bundesliga club after the Belgian inspired them to victory in the Supercup.

Manchester City have been linked with signing the former Chelsea winger, but Hecking is confident he will get to work at least another year with De Bruyne.

“It would certainly be nice and I think it will happen too,” Hecking said. “Kevin showed what he’s capable of doing for us this season and we don’t want to sell him.

“That’s our stance and I think a lot would have to happen for him to go. Although you can never tell in football, as his coach I do expect to have him this season.”

Lampard endures losing MLS debut

Former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard had an unhappy Major League Soccer debut on Saturday when his new club New York City FC were beaten 3-2 by the Montreal Impact.

The 37-year-old received a rousing ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd when he came on as a substitute in the 69th minute, with New York FC already 2-1 behind.

Montreal went further ahead when Ignacio Piatti scored from the penalty spot in the 84th minute, his second goal of the game, before New York FC managed a consolation through Thomas McNamara one minute later.

It was a satisfying away win for the Impact over a New York team that also included Spaniard David Villa and Italian Andrea Pirlo.

Paris SG make it three in a row

Paris St-Germain claimed a third straight Trophy of Champions with a 2-0 win over Olympique Lyon at Montreal’s Stade Saputo on Saturday night.

Full-back Serge Aurier headed the first goal in the 11th minute and Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani scored from close range seven minutes later.

Lyon, runners-up to PSG in Ligue 1 last season, finished the game with 10 men after Maxime Gonalons was shown a second yellow card just after the hour.

PSG were without Argentine internationals Javier Pastore and Ezequiel Lavezzi who have returned to the squad late following their involvement in the Copa America.

Teddy’s Stevenage beaten by Spurs

Teddy Sheringham was unable to get one over his old club Tottenham as Stevenage’s pre-season preparations ended with a 2-0 defeat at the Lamex Stadium.

The ex-Spurs striker, who scored 124 goals in 277 appearances at White Hart Lane, is in his first managerial post with the League Two club and welcomed his former employers for Stevenage’s final friendly of the summer.

Tottenham’s XI was made up of players from their development squad and they cruised to victory thanks to Nathan Oduwa’s opener and Shayon Harrison’s second-half penalty.
