Swimmer Charmaine Mifsud won Team Malta’s fourth gold medal at the Special Olympics World Games when she topped the 100 metres breaststroke in Los Angeles yesterday.

Bowler Philip Gruppetta and long jumper Jessica Dalli both won a silver medal while track and field athlete Alec Falzon took bronze as Team Malta increased their overall tally in California to 16 medals – four gold, five silver and seven bronze.

Mifsud achieved Malta’s best result of the day when winning the 100 metres breaststroke race at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center. She touched home first in a time of one minute 45.17 seconds.

Bangladeshi swimmer Parul Akter was second in 1:48.29 while Yi-hsuan Tseng, of Chinese Taipei, was third in 1:56.14.

In bowling, Gruppetta secured his second medal in Los Angeles when he placed second in the men’s singles competition.

Gruppetta compiled an overall score of 519 to finish just two pins behind gold medal winner Deangelo Bullard, of Bahamas.

Singapore bowler Wei Xiang Poh placed third with 467.

Earlier last week, Gruppetta had teamed up with Natasha Bianchi to place third in the doubles event.

Dalli second

In track and field events, Dalli placed second in the long jump event with a leap of 4.41 metres.

She placed just behind winner Mikasja Kwasie, of Surinam, who managed an effort of 4.67 metres.

The bronze medal was won by Rufina Shagardanova, of Uzbekistan, who produced a jump of 3.75 metres.

Falzon collected his second bronze medal of the Games when he placed third in the softball throw.

Falzon, who last week finished third in the 50 metres, produced an effort of 7.16 metres.

The gold medal was won by Jamaica’s Kirk Wint who had a throw of 15.17 metres.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Tmeyon Logie was second with 14.46 metres.

The Special Olympics World Games come to a close tonight when all participating athletes will take part in the closing ceremony at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
