There are many initiatives I’d like to see enacted into laws, such as a 20-hour working week, a living wage which would be enough to supply all necessities.

However, I know that if Prime Minister Joseph Muscat would be crazy enough to introduce such legislation, he would be orchestrating the funeral of Malta. The country would be ostracised by all business enterprises and would become bankrupt in no time.

What I suggest is that an organisation works to help establish a common electoral programme by political parties all over the world who would care to join. The parties concerned would promise that if all of them are in power at the same time or if they represent let’s say at least half the population of the world at the same time, they would enact a commonly-agreed progressive law.

At present, unions are afraid to take progressive action because, with so many new technologies that could replace the workers, they fear that should they take a stand to, say, introduce a living wage, the business bosses would just sack workers and introduce robots instead.

Workers all over the world should unite and not compete among themselves. The organisation that would work to bring about this common electoral programme should encourage members of the United Nations, European Union, the G7 and so on to sign such an agreement.

Anyone who is willing to work on such a project could contact me by e-mail at gatt-ciancio@melita.com. Let’s hope we see a united front and a common electoral programme by all those parties who really want to see the well-being of workers.
