Two sixth formers from De La Salle College, Vittoriosa, participated in an International Wildlife Research Week organised by Swiss Youth in Science (SYiS) foundation.

Martina-Marie Pizzuto and Francesco Pavia took part in the event in Switzerland after they had placed second in the Malta Student Science Forum, a non-formal educational science programme organised by the National Student Travel Foundation (NSTF).

The prize was supported by the Environment Ministry.

The event in the Swiss Alps provided 24 students from other European countries the opportunity to learn and research in the Alpine environment. During the week, they conducted a scientific study on species of plants and animals found in the region.

They learnt how to observe and collect data to answer scientific questions, and how to analyse data collected using statistical methods and interpret their results.

The students also gave a public presentation of their research and discussed the project and results obtained.

The Maltese students and those from Switzerland and Sweden presented a study on the effects of different weather conditions on the Common Chaffinch birdsong.
