The American Chamber of Commerce in Malta (Am Cham Malta) has welcomed the European Parliament’s strong backing to the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement between the EU and the US, voting with a large majority in favour of its resolution containing a number of recommendations to the European Commission on TTIP.
Among its long list of recommendations, the resolution urges the Commission to ensure that the negotiations lead to an “ambitious, comprehensive and balanced trade and investment agreement of a high standard that would promote sustainable growth with shared benefits across member states, with mutual and reciprocal benefits between the partners, increase international competitiveness and open up new opportunities for EU companies, in particular SMEs, support the creation of high-quality jobs for European citizens and directly benefit European consumers.”
Tanya Sciberras Camilleri, president of AmCham Malta, said: “AmCham Malta has been advocating for progress on discussions for this agreement and has been at the forefront of information initiatives for both its members and non-members.” Such a vote will “give a new impetus to discussions and act as an important framework for negotiators from both sides”.
