Desiree Attard, the daughter of the late Department of Information photographer Martin Attard, is appealing for assistance to put together €4,000 to bring down her father’s body to Malta after he passed away in Croatia on July 23.

Mr Attard’s death sent shockwaves in the media world leaving his colleagues stunned at the news. A quiet and reserved man, Mr Attard, who had been with the DOI for 20 years, was described as humble, a gentleman and a great friend.

His daughter said she was left devastated when she received a phone call from the Maltese Foreign Ministry on July 28 informing her that her father had died of a heart attack five days earlier.

A dancer in the UK, Ms Attard immediately bought a plane ticket to Malta.

But she was in for another shock when she found it would cost around €4,000 to fly her father’s body to Malta.

“This is the best offer I found to get him back and it doesn’t include the funeral expenses but my priority is to get my father back home,” she said.

"My dad lived for his art, and had no savings to cover this cost. I am asking for help to raise this money just to bring him home," she wrote on a website she set up seeking support to raise the funds.
