Swimmer Klara Zammit won her second medal at the Special Olympics World Games and there were other podium finishes for the Maltese team in Los Angeles, California, following high placings in bocce and bowling competitions, yesterday.

Zammit had opened her programme in the Games with a third placing in 1,500m freestyle on Tuesday.

And she bettered that with a silver medal in the F2 Division 400m freestyle race in her second showing at the Uytengsu Aquatics Centre pool. She clocked 7:01.94 to finish behind race winner Nicole Bartley, of Australia.

Mexico’s Adriana Garcia was third in 8:02.95.

Zammit’s next race will be the 800m freestyle in the F2 Division on Saturday.

Bocce player Mark Agius was also a silver medal winner after a fine showing at the lanes inside the LA Convention Centre.

Agius finished with a score of eight points, one behind gold medallist David Martin Meister, of Germany. Uruguay’s Ricardo De Pablo was third.

In bowling doubles, played at the Lucky Strike Centre, Natasha Bianchi and Philip Gruppetta rolled a combined score of 911 pins to finish third in the final classification.

The gold medal went to Sweden, 959, with the United States a close second on 957. Canada were fourth behind Malta on 838 pins.

At present, there are 22 members of Special Olympics Malta representing the country at the World Games which wrap up on Sunday.
