The second of three €13 million helicopters to be used for border control was inaugurated this morning

Home Affairs Minister Carmello Abela said the government had spent more than €60 million on the Air Wing so far this legislature. The investment, however, would not stop there, as the inauguration ceremony also saw the signing of a preliminary agreement for a third new helicopter.

"A modern nation cannot function without a modern force and that is what we are building," he said.

Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi said that through different EU funds the AFM had also updated its maritime fleet, procured new fixed wing aircraft, new hangars and IT systems.

Mr Curmi said the new helicopters had enhanced situation adaptation, advanced navigation technology and other state of the art features.

Yesterday, some €75 million worth of EU funds were approved for Malta's national security.
