Swansea City succeeded in jumping four places from the previous term by finishing eighth at the end of the 2014-15 Premier League campaign.

However, the Welsh side failed narrowly missed out on qualification to the Europa League.

Tottenham will be playing in the continent this season after a fifth-place finish, also showing progress on the previous campaign.

The transfer of Wilfried Bony, Swansea’s best striker, to Manchester City did not hinder their results.

Ashley Williams was selected as their man of the season.

Many thought that manager Gary Monk would receive the sack but he silenced his critics after wins over Manchester United, Burnley and West Brom in Swansea’s first three outings. That opening saw Monk claim the first managerial award of the 2014-15 campaign.

Swansea went on to do the double over both United and Arsenal, only the third side ever to manage that feat in Premier League history.

Last summer, Tottenham changed their man at the helm, calling in Argentine Mauricio Pochettino from Southampton for the sacked Tim Sherwood – the third managerial movement inside a year at White Hart Lane.

Harry Kane, Tottenham’s player of the season who also won the PFA young player award, made a big contribution for the Spurs last season after scoring 28 goals.

Kane was still virtually unknown to the rest of the country and still a relative newcomer to Spurs fans at the beginning of the 2014-15 season.

However, Kane became Spurs’ first-choice striker by November and broke a club goal scoring record by March before landing the PFA Young Player of the Year Award in April. He also broke into the England squad and scored on his international debut.

Tottenham’s best moment last season was the 5-3 trimming of champions Chelsea and their march to the League Cup final.

Tottenham had the advantage of playing all their League Cup ties in front of their own fans. Chelsea eventually avenged that 5-3 setback after beating the Spurs 2-0 in the Wembley final.

In the FA Cup, Spurs fell at home to Leicester, 1-2 in the fourth round, and in the Europa League Fiorentina stopped Tottenham in their stride in the second round – 1-3 on aggregate.

A fourth-round upset arrived for Swansea in the League Cup – 1-2 at Liverpool.

The Swans fell in the same round in the FA Cup tournament – 1-3 at Blackburn Rovers.
