This letter is in reply to Alfred Farrugia’s article with regard to the spring hunting referendum: ‘Why the referendum is wrong’ (April 8).

I have waited for about three months, including a spring hunting season, before writing and this to allow any of the possible consequences highlighted by him in the event of a No vote to manifest themselves following a Yes result.

This has not happened, of course, because, in the first place, those who voted No are, by nature, averse to any form of threat, intimidation, violence or law breaking.

The same cannot be said of the other side from where we have had too many instances of all the above. Which brings me to the main point of my letter and is directed towards Farrugia.

It takes very little to plant a destructive seed, whether intentionally or otherwise, in the fertile soil of our already undisciplined and violence-orientated temperament. This especially when nurtured with such inflammatory fertiliser like: “tyranny”, “dictatorship” and, worst of all, “home-grown terrorism”.

Had the No vote won, then the above poisonous pen could well have fanned the flames of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Be careful what you write is something we should all keep in mind as suggestion can be a very powerful force.
