Delio Rossi... led Bologna to the Serie A last season.Delio Rossi... led Bologna to the Serie A last season.

Carpi, Frosinone and Bologna have won the right to participate in the 2015/16 Serie A after filling the three promotion slots available in last season’s Serie B.

For Bologna, Italy champions seven times, promotion meant an immediate return to the top flight after their relegation at the end of a poor 2013/14 campaign.

By contrast, Carpi and Frosinone will be making their first ever showings in the Serie A.

Bologna’s objective should be a safe position in mid-table but this club can go better.

Only last autumn, they were taken over by New York lawyer Joe Tacopina and Montreal Impact president Joey Saputo.

From a club struggling to make ends meet, the new investors made sure that Bologna acquired the right players in the January transfer window to regain their Serie A status.

The likes of Ibrahima Mbaye (Inter), Da Costa, Gianluca Sansone, Daniele Gastaldello and Nenad Krsticic (all from Sampdoria) signed for Bologna, who, eventually, won promotion but only after beating Avellino and Pescara in the play-offs.

Towards the end of the season coach Diego Lopez was shown the backdoor by Bologna and the much-travelled Delio Rossi was entrusted with the job.

The move came rather late but it paid desired dividends.

This summer, former Lazio and Palermo mentor Rossi was confirmed for another year and tasked with helping the Felsinei establish themselves in the Serie A.

To date, Bologna have concluded a number of key signings including Luca Rossettini (Cagliari), Luca Rizzo (Sampdoria), Amadou Diawara (San Marino), Alfred Duncan (Sampdoria), Lorenzo Crisetig (Inter), Antonio Mirante (free agent), Matteo Brighi (free agent) and Fabio Brienza (free agent).

Like the other two promoted sides, Frosinone have opted for continuity and did not resort to a change of coach

However, in my opinion, these reinforcements may not be enough to help Bologna reach their pre-set objective of finishing in a trouble-free spot next season.

The transfer window will not close before August 31 and by that day, one expects Bologna to sign a few more players to help them make the grade.

Carpi, based in a town with a population of 67,000 in Emilia Romagna, dominated the Serie B championship last year from start to finish.

They were declared bankrupt in 1999 and re-established the following year. Carpi’s meteoric rise is the result of good organisation and excellent forward planning by the club’s administrators.

Carpi got promoted to the Serie B for the first time only two years ago and now they intend to emulate the feat of modest Chievo who were admired by many for their determination and team-work when they first made it to the top flight 15 years ago.

This summer, Carpi have kept faith with coach Fabrizio Castori. Last season, they won promotion despite a relatively low €3m financial budget.

Next season, many are expecting Carpi to find life difficult among the elite. But don’t be so sure of this.

Indeed, they do not have the financial muscle to challenge the big guns for the honours so expectations from their supporters are not so high. But, the fact that Carpi will be competing against Italy’s top clubs is already a big achievement in itself.

This summer, Carpi have already unveiled a few new players, including some experienced ones, to ensure that the transition to Serie A football is smooth.

Ryder Matos (Fiorentina), Luca Marrone, Alberto Cerri (both Juventus), Zeljko Brkic (Udinese), Wallace (Chelsea), Francesco Benussi (free agent), Andrea Lazzari (free agent), Nicolas Spolli (Catania), Gabriel Silva-Bubnjic (Udinese) and Raphael Martinho (Catania) are the new players who are expected to help Carpi make the leap to ensure safety.

Frosinone finished runners-up in last season’s Serie B, nine points adrift of Carpi.

Like the other two promoted sides, Frosinone have opted for continuity as they did not resort to a change of coach. In fact, former Torino striker Roberto Stellone, 38, is still at the helm.

Obviously, Frosinone’s priority should be to avoid relegation next season.

They have not been very active on the transfer market, however. So far this summer, Frosinone have successfully concluded deals to sign Nicola Leali (Juventus), Raman Chibsah (Sassuolo), Modibo Diakite (free agent), Daniele Verde (Roma), Aleandro Rosi (Genoa) and Daniel Pavlovic (Grasshopper).

More signings of note are expected in the next couple of weeks, in particular to bolster their blunt attack.
