The Labour Party has criticised shadow minister Jason Azzopardi “for attacking Malta”.

It said in a statement that instead of justifying his actions in the acquisition of HSBC property in Valletta, Dr Azzopardi was using the social media to refer everyone to an article in Italian which tried to disgrace Malta’s citizenship programme, which was approved by the European Commission.

The article quotes Dr Azzopardi saying that the government was prostituting itself. This, the PL said, was the same argument used by Opposition leader Simon Busuttil to put off the investment coming to Malta through the programme.

The PL said Dr Azzopardi’s attack took place only a few hours after his and former minister Tonio Fenech’s involvement in the €2.2 million payment for the acquisition of the HSBC property by the previous government was questioned by the Labour Party.

The PL said that Dr Azzopardi had not replied to the questions raised and his attack showed that the Opposition had a major negativity problem.
