The report (July 22) regarding traffic contraventions by owners of cars with foreign licence plates is disquieting. Surely it does not require nuclear physics to keep track of all vehicles entering Malta.

My suggestion is that a pair of temporary numbered stickers should be issued to be attached to the front and back of such cars and be visible all the time. The person responsible would have to give a proper contact address.

It would be a contravention to change address without informing the authorities.

When the owner registers the car for a Maltese licence or leaves Malta, a search on the computer would highlight any pending fines and these would have to be paid on the spot.

I am amazed how Transport Malta could allow selective parking fines to be issued by local wardens – who seem to have a commission on yellow paint – but is not able to instill proper discipline in the chaotic traffic of these islands.

I have been told by one of the wardens that when I see a foreign-plated car, it is up to me to inform Transport Malta. Why can’t the wardens do this?

I am aware that this problem is prevalent in the EU, but this is due to the easy way cars can move from one country to another. In Malta all cars have to pass through some form of control and thus my suggestion could be easily implemented.

Faces should be red all round. The chairman of Transport Malta and his subordinates must wake up to reality. Systems exist, why not apply them properly?
