The overseas press

President Barack Obama wraps up a two-day landmark visit to Kenya later today marked by aid on business and security but a firm message on gay rights and corruption. The Standard reports that in a joint press conference after bilateral talks with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, Obama compared homophobia – on the rise across Africa – to racial discrimination he had encountered in the United States.  

According to Reuters, talks between Greece and its international creditors over a new bailout package will be delayed by a couple of days because of organisational issues. The agency quotes a finance ministry official saying the talks between the technical teams of the lenders will start on Tuesday, while the mission chiefs will arrive in Athens with a delay of a couple of days for technical reasons.

Espresso says the former head of a collapsed Portuguese bank has been placed under house arrest. Ricardo Selgado, head of Banco Espirito Santo (BES) for more than 20 years, is being investigated over allegations of forgery, breach of trust, tax evasion and money laundering.

Journal du Dimanche reports British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne will take Britain’s case for European Union reform to Paris today, seeking support from his French counterpart for a deal the Conservative government can put before voters in a promised in-out referendum. During his trip to Paris, the first in a series of visits to European capitals, he will argue that with public support for reform rising across the EU, now is the time to deliver lasting change.

Al Arabiya reports the leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah group, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, has said Washington will remain the “Great Satan” following nuclear deal with world powers and it can still count on Iran’s support. In his first public remarks since the agreement was reached this month in Geneva, Nasrallah said he was sure Tehran would confound critics who say it would end support to Hezbollah.

A light plane crashed into a residential area in Tokyo this morning, setting fire to several houses. There were no immediate reports of injuries or casualties. Japan's public broadcaster NHK said three people were involved in the accident and one of them had been rescued, but offered few other details. At least three houses and two cars were on fire in the capital's residential district of Chofu, and the crash also damaged the roofs of other houses nearby.

A man aboard a flight of Shenzhen Airlines China tried to set fire to the plane using gasoline and a lighter but it 'was stopped by passengers and crew members. CCTV said that the incident happened at night on board the flight from Taizhou in Guangzhou, near Hong Kong. The broadcaster added that the aircraft and landed at Guangzhou and 95 passengers and nine crew members were successfully evacuated.

Fox News says hundreds of people, including local politicians, have attended the funeral of Sandra Bland, a black woman found dead in a Texas jail cell days after she was arrested for a minor traffic offence. Activists say her death, although considered a suicide, is another example of police brutality towards minorities.

The Pope is putting up some of the gifts received by heads of state for sale to help the poor. Ansa says that in what is known as the “clothing warehouse” for Vatican employees, prelates and the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See, gifts popped up on some shelves to help the most disadvantaged.

AP reports Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton has said she never knowingly sent or received classified information using her private email server and did not know what messages were being cited by intelligence investigators as examples of emails containing classified information. Clinton spoke briefly about the email matter after a Democratic gathering at the Madison County Historical Complex in which she stressed her commitment to a variety of issues, including her support for pre-kindergarten education and abortion access.

France 24 says more than 100,000 people have signed a petition against the closure of a beach on the French Riviera to allow Saudi King Salman to holiday in private. The petition insists the public beach in Vallauris should be “available for the benefit of all”. Authorities sealed off the beach early on Saturday to prevent any protesters from occupying it as King Salman was due to arrive in the area.

Bild reports German Chancellor Angela Merkel was taken ill last night while attending a performance of Tristan and Isolde. The paper says during the interval, Merkel  passed out, and “slipped out of her chair”. She regained her composure two minutes later.


Los Angeles Times says the Special Olympic World Games have kicked off in Los Angeles as 6,500 athletes from 165 countries streamed into the Memorial Coliseum to cheers and roars. The athletes will participate in 25 sports over nine days, ranging from weightlifting to the triathlon. Applause greeted the athletes, including a tiny contingent from Afghanistan. (TVM will screen the opening ceremony at 4 pm today)
