I feel I should publicly acknowledge an exceptional and spontaneous gesture at the magical Smart City Lagoon in Kalkara recently on the occasion of the Institute of Maltese Journalism Awards.

For the Sports Journalism Awards there were two finalists, Kevin Azzopardi, sports editor of the Times of Malta and myself.

The adjudicating panel deservedly awarded the prize to Kevin. At the customary brief victory speech to a surprised and appreciative audience, Kevin gave scant attention to his undoubted talents and focused on my humble credentials, almost wishing to celebrate his moment with me.

Such a magnanimous act brings out the nobility of sport when practised not only in the written word but also in deed. Sport has unfortunately lost its innocence, but God’s greatest gift to mankind can still offer abeacon of light to brighten our world. Thank you Kevin.
