A rubbish bag for organic waste will be introduced in five localities in October, and will be collected on Mondays and Fridays.

Environment Minister Leo Brincat yesterday said the pilot project will be launched in Birkirkara, Cospicua, Għaxaq, Ta’ Xbiex and Mdina. It will then be extended to another four localities in January. The trial period will take six months.

Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Buontempo, who is responsible for local councils, said 60 per cent of waste is estimated to be organic. This waste could be recycled for other use, such as to produce energy.

The pilot project will include an information campaign by Wastserv and the local councils.
