Michelle Muscat, the prime minister's wife, has visited the Special Olympics Malta team during its final preparations in Los Angeles prior to the opening of the World Games. She was invited to Los Angeles as a guest of honour by Special Olympics International.

Mrs Muscat congratulated the Maltese athletes for their skill and determination.

"In the coming nine days, you will demonstrate your skills and abilities acquired through intense training and support backed-up by a committed staff and volunteers," she said.

Anna Calleja, head of Special Olympics Malta, thanked Mrs Muscat and her foundation, The Marigold Foundation, for the unprecedented commitment to Maltese athletes and for making possible their participation in the Special Olympics World Games by providing funds, awareness and support.

Mrs Muscat reminded the athletes of the special olympics oath ‘Let me win! But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt’.

Nearly 7,000 Special Olympics athletes from 177 countries have come together for the World Games. The Malta athletes will compete in athletics, aquatics, bocce, bowling, artistic gymnastics, and table tennis.

Mrs Muscat raised funds for the team (and the Marigold Foundation) when she swam between Gozo and Malta at the end of last month.
