Last weekend, a group of 18 bowlers from the MTBA youth and junior squads participated in the British Junior Open at the Namco Funscape Bowling Centre, Norwich.

An impressive field of 230 bowlers, hailing mainly from the British Isles, participated in the various age categories, competing in separate single, doubles and team events with cumulative scores deciding the All Events standings.

Not for the first time, the Maltese contingent produced a superb collective effort, scooping medals in every event according to individual category, as well as in the All Events standings to do their coaches, association and country proud.

No fewer than 10 medals were won, namely five gold, three silver and two bronze.

The list of successes in Norwich reads:

Singles: Sara Xuereb – gold U-15; Edward Xuereb – gold U-13; Kurt Attard – silver U-15; Ayrton Ciangura – bronze U-13; Michaela Briffa – bronze U-21.

Doubles: Sara Xuereb and Matthew Magro – gold, Inter-mediates.

Team Event: Sara Xuereb, Matthew Magro, Kurt Attard, Nicky Zahra – gold B Division.

All Events: Sara Xuereb – gold medal Under-15; Kurt Attard – silver Under-15; Edward Xuereb – silver Under-13.

For this latest, successful foray into the international arena, Team Malta were accompanied by MTBA mentor Liliana Spiteri as well as a few parents whose moral and vocal support played no small part in their children’s fine showing at the British Junior Open.
