Daniel Cilia has just published his 100th book, which is about his other 99 publications, but the photographer will not be stopping at this milestone.

With another 43 books in the making, The One Hundredth is a collection of 100 images, most of which were chosen by some of the authors of his other publications.

The authors were asked to choose one photograph from a book they worked on with Mr Cilia and write something about it and also about their working relationship with the photographer.

Since he worked on more than one book with some authors, while others have passed away and some did not manage to send in their contributions in time, the total number of contributors was actually 42. Mr Cilia then added photographs to bring the total to 100, and some of these are being published for the first time.

The oldest photo in this publication was taken in 1976 and shows an elderly woman putting sandals on the foot of a child sitting on a low fence and tightly hugging a ginger cat.

Mr Cilia was 13 when he took this photo and he has been taking pictures ever since.

The limited edition book is not a pictorial biography and is meant to be a celebration of his achievement of 100 books about Malta and Gozo.

“Editor Fr Charles Cini SDB came up with the idea when I had told him that by the end of this year I would have completed some 104 or 105 books.

“He suggested making a book to celebrate the 100th... and we came up with the idea of involving as many authors as possible from the previous 99 books.”

The One Hundredth collection was published by the Salesians of Don Bosco, who for the past 10 years were one of Mr Cilia’s major publishers.

Fr Cini produces books to raise funds for St Patrick’s School in Sliema. The founder of the Salesians, St John Bosco, actually started a publishing house in Turin, which employed the homeless youths, promulgated knowledge with the printed books and reinvested any profits in homes for the youths.

An exhibition of Mr Cilia’s 100 books is on display at the National Library of Gozo in Triq il-Vajringa, Victoria, where the photographer fell in love with books as a child.

It will be open between 9am and 12.30pm until August 1.
