At the end of season 2014-15, Queens Park Rangers returned to the Championship after only one year in the Premier League.

By contrast, Southampton were the surprise packet, finishing seventh to qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

QPR sacked manager Harry Redknapp at the start of February and appointed Chris Ramsey in an attempt to avoid the drop.

In their previous two seasons in the Premier League, 2011-12 and 2012-13, the Rs were also embroiled in the relegation battle and, it looks like they have failed to learn from past mistakes.

Charlie Austin, QPR’s man of the season, stood head and shoulders above the rest and netted 17 goals.

The new signings failed to shine, but the other players who fought for promotion the year before gave their utmost to keep the team in the top echelon.

Schemer Matt Phillips was another ace in the pack and his assists were a big bonus for the team.

At St Mary’s, the exodus of key players drew criticism from the fans but Dutch coach Ronald Koeman revamped Southampton with a few shrewd signings.

The Saints were expected to figure in the bottom half of the standings last season but instead qualified for the Europa League.

Defender Ryan Bertrand, coming via Chelsea, was named player of the season at Southampton while Graziano Pelle, an Italy international, was the only player to feature in all 38 matches for the Saints.

In the FA Cup, Southampton beat Ipswich in a replay but were eliminated at home by Crystal Palace in the fourth round. In the other cup competition they reached the last eight, only to go down to Sheffield United 0-1 at Bramall Lane.

Queens Park Rangers experienced early cup exits in both competitions – losing at home to Sheffield United in the FA Cup and going down to lowly Burton Albion away in the League Cup.
